About FastStart

FastStart Students

What is FastStart?

Students in FastStart will attend daily classes in pre-calculus, biology, and chemistry, the main foundations of the science curriculum. Throughout the program, there will be multiple scheduled group study sessions and tutorials. Other specialized activities include research lab visits, health disparities seminars, and physician mentor activities that can guide students on how to move forward in their competitive fields.

Most of the material will be new to students, but some topics may also be a review of topics learned in high school.

The Goal of FastStart

The goal of FastStart is not only to give new material to students, but to prepare students for the rigor of a college curriculum. In addition to these educational activities, students will have the opportunity to learn more about successfully transitioning into the university life with workshops on study skills, financial aid, and professional development.

Past activities include student panels with FastStart and Medical Scholars Program (MSP) alumni, faculty and medical student presentations, introductions to pre-health and health disparities, and tours of the UCR School of Medicine and local hospitals.

The Benefits of FastStart

FastStart is designed to set the stage for students’ first two years of their undergraduate studies. Many students find that a major benefit of FastStart is their ability to create bonds with peers that have similar interests and aspirations who they can grow and learn with throughout the coming years.

Over the course of the program, there will also be opportunities for students to meet faculty, staff, and physicians. Developing these connections could potentially give students a networking advantage as they progress through their undergraduate curriculum and seek mentorship from others.

Those who perform well in FastStart will also receive priority consideration when applying to the Medical Scholars Program, another program sponsored by the UCR School of Medicine that is geared towards disadvantaged students entering medical school and health science related careers.

What Students Should Expect

  • Daily classes in pre-calculus, biology and chemistry.
  • Study sessions and tutorials, study skills workshops, and introduction to academic resources.
  • Health-related activities with UCR School of Medicine students, staff, faculty and physicians.
  • Social activities with other FastStart participants.
  • Workshops on UCR pre-health resources.

More than Just Studying

The FastStart Program is more than just classroom and studying, we have some fun, too. We will tour local hospitals and meet doctors, residents and other hospital professionals. These visits provide unique opportunities to closely examine your interest in particular fields of medicine and enable you to develop a mentoring relationship with a physician.

In addition, students will be introduced to a variety of campus resources and academic enrichment programs that you can use throughout your collegiate career.
